Final Project: Pokémon / Pokémon Battle Tutor

There are many different kinds of Pokemon, and each one has its own unique strengths and weaknesses. In our introduction to the different types of Pokemon, we will explore their physical attributes, such as height and weight, as well as their combat abilities, such as attack and defense stats.

We start with their height and weight. Even though Pokemon are a fictional species, they still follow some of the expectations we have for real animals. In the chart below, we see that the smallest average height is for the Bug, Ice and Fairy types. The largest average height is for the Steel and Poison types.

Pokemon weights function like you would expect as well. With bug, fairy and flying types being the lightest and ice, ground and steel types being the heaviest.

Note: would be cool to turn these into box-and-whisker plots to better visualize the min/max and range

Pokemon hieght and weight do appear to follow a rough normal distrubution, with some extreme outliers.

These two stats are correlated, as one might suspect:

Similarly, we can also look at the distribution of Pokemon stats by their weight and height. Below, we have visualized Pokemon weight vs. total base stats. We can see a correlation at first, but as weight increases, after a certain point, there is no clear trend.

We can also visualize things like the game of origin of each Pokemon.

We can also look at Pokemon stats by their legendary status. We can see that legendary pokemon tend to have higher base stats than non-legendary pokemon.

We can also explore how Pokemon stats are distributed by their experience growth rate.

Finally, we can investigate the distribution of the different stats Pokemon have.

We can also investigate Pokemon distribution by their BMI:

Finally, we also have Pokemon sprites that we plan to incorporate into a interactive visualization. Sprites are available for all pokemon but we’re limiting the number of sprites displayed to 25 so as not to overload the page.

We envision these spires will be part of the hover information overlays for each Pokemon.
