Pokémon Base Stats
Introduction
Base stats are fundamental numerical values that determine a Pokémon’s battle capabilities and potential for growth. Every Pokémon species has its own unique set of base stats that reflects its natural strengths and weaknesses.
Each Pokémon has six base stats that influence different aspects of battle performance:
- HP (Hit Points): Determines how much damage a Pokémon can withstand before fainting.
- Attack: Partly determines how much damage a Pokémon deals when using a physical move.
- Defense: Partly determines how much damage a Pokémon receives when hit by a physical move.
- Special Attack: Partly determines how much damage a Pokémon deals when using a special move.
- Special Defense: Partly determines how much damage a Pokémon receives when hit by a special move.
- Speed: Determines which Pokémon moves first in battle when using moves of the same priority.
The total of these six values is known as the “Base Stat Total” (BST), which provides a rough measure of a Pokémon’s overall power level.
Base Stat Ranges and Distribution
Base stats typically range from 1 to 255, but most Pokémon have stats between 30 and 120. Legendary Pokémon often have higher base stat totals than regular Pokémon.
- Low tier: BST of 180-400
- Mid tier: BST of 400-500
- High tier: BST of 500-600
- Legendary tier: BST of 600+
Pokémon are often specialized, with higher values in certain stats that complement their intended battle role:
- Physical Attackers: High Attack and often high Speed (e.g., Machamp, Heracross)
- Special Attackers: High Special Attack and often high Speed (e.g., Gengar, Alakazam)
- Physical Tanks: High HP and Defense (e.g., Onix, Steelix)
- Special Tanks: High HP and Special Defense (e.g., Blissey, Umbreon)
- Mixed Attackers: Balanced Attack and Special Attack (e.g., Lucario, Infernape)
- Balanced: Relatively even distribution of stats (e.g., Dragonite, Mewtwo)
How Base Stats Affect Actual Stats
A Pokémon’s actual stats in battle are calculated using several factors:
Stat = ((2 × Base + IV + (EV ÷ 4)) × Level ÷ 100 + 5) × Nature
Where:
- Base: The Pokémon’s base stat
- IV (Individual Value): A value between 0-31, representing genetic potential
- EV (Effort Value): A value between 0-252, representing trained strength through battling
- Level: The Pokémon’s current level (1-100)
- Nature: A multiplier (0.9, 1.0, or 1.1) based on the Pokémon’s nature
For HP, the formula is slightly different:
HP = ((2 × Base + IV + (EV ÷ 4)) × Level ÷ 100) + Level + 10
Stat Changes Through Evolution
When Pokémon evolve, their base stats typically increase. The distribution often remains proportional but with higher values across the board. Some evolutionary lines show dramatic shifts in stat distribution, reflecting a change in battle role.
For example, when Eevee evolves:
- Vaporeon gains substantial HP
- Jolteon gains exceptional Speed
- Flareon gains impressive Attack
Strategic Importance
Understanding base stats is crucial for:
- Team Building: Choosing Pokémon that complement each other’s strengths and weaknesses.
- Move Selection: Selecting moves that leverage a Pokémon’s stronger offensive stat.
- EV Training: Deciding where to invest effort values to maximize potential.
- Role Assignment: Determining whether a Pokémon should be used offensively, defensively, or as a support.
- Prediction: Anticipating opponent strategies based on their Pokémon’s likely stat distribution.
A well-rounded team should include Pokémon with diverse stat distributions to handle various battle situations. However, competitive play often favors Pokémon with high Speed and at least one exceptional offensive stat.
Changes Across Generations
Game balancing has led to changes in base stats across different generations:
- Generation 1: Special stat encompassed both special attack and special defense
- Generation 2: Special split into Special Attack and Special Defense
- Generation 3: Introduction of abilities and natures, affecting stat calculations
- Generation 4: Physical/Special split, where moves were previously categorized as physical or special based on their type
- Later generations: Stat adjustments for certain Pokémon to improve balance
Understanding these historical changes helps players adapt strategies when playing across different Pokémon games.
